Orthodontics – The Father of Orthodontics
Dr Edward H Angle is considered the 'father of modern orthodontics'.
Orthodontics is a form of dentistry that requires expert study and training, often involving complex cases that are not just about placing braces, but can involve extreme treatment, such as oral surgery. Breaking a patient's jaw is perhaps the most extreme orthodontics gets. The word orthodontics derives from the Greek ortho, 'straight' and odons, 'tooth'. Tooth irregularity and disproportionate jaws can cause a multitude of problems – some practical, some aesthetic.
Orthodontics and Dentistry
There are orthodontics who do more – in America one branch of orthodontics has branched into not just restructuring the jaw or straightening teeth, but controlling the growth of the whole face – a specialism defined as dentofacial orthopedics. The history of orthodontics began with Dr Edward H Angle. He is the first dentist credited with limiting his practice to orthodontics. From his work, America now has the Edward H Angle Society of Orthodontists and the E H Angle Education and Research Foundation.
The Father of Orthodontics: A Brief History
Dr Angle has been described as a man of intelligence and sensitivity – a perfectionist when it comes to orthodontists. Born in 1855 in Pennsylvania and one of seven children, Angle's upbringing was infused with self reliance – a trait that no doubt informed his perfectionism when it came to orthodontics. His perseverance helped establish a whole new specialism in dentistry – orthodontics owes a lot to the man who was not considered academic as such, but was outstanding at mechanics. And its this that prompted him to develop and invent orthodontic mechanisms. After becoming an apprentice dentist, he graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dentistry in 1876. His inventive inclination led him to create the first real orthodontics appliance – the jack and traction screw.
After becoming chair of orthodontia at the University of Minnesota, Dr Angle claimed, “...the establishment of normal occlusion of the teeth should be the highest aim of the orthodontist.” He went on to teach orthodontics, before opening his own private school dedicated to orthodontics. At the turn of the century, Dr Angle devoted himself to study and refining orthodontic tools, mechanisms and appliances. He opened the Edward H. Angle College of Orthodontia in California.
