Positive Attitude to Orthodontics
New research shows a more positive attitude towards orthodontics, including wearing braces.
At one point, orthodontics was associated with gawky teenagers being fitted with unbearably clunky metal braces. But developments in orthodontics mean that there’s been a seismic shift in how people in England and Wales feel about dentistry. More of us are waking up to the impact a beautiful smile can have on our looks, confidence and self esteem.
The research from Ipsos MORI states an estimated 18% of people in England and Wales feel that they would benefit from wearing braces. What’s more, orthodontists are saying that more people are prepared to invest in their teeth and make ‘financial sacrifices’ to undergo orthodontic treatments. The findings show that attitudes are changing as teeth become increasingly important in the world of cosmetics. Popular TV shows like the X-Factor as well as the influence of American movies and TV means more Brits are aware of their teeth – or more importantly, the faults in their teeth. In America, orthodontics is a rite of passage for teenagers. Having a perfect, white bright smile is seen to be just as crucial as a good haircut or gym-toned figure. Looks count. But it isn’t just about trying to be a Hollywood star, it’s about having a smile you feel confident and happy with.

Orthodontics – A Valuable Investment
Now, people in the UK are seeing orthodontics as a valuable investment. The survey commissioned by the British Lingual Orthodontic Society interviewed 877 people to uncover the attitudes and awareness around orthodontics. A staggering 72% of those questioned were unaware that invisible braces existed. Discreet, invisible braces are one of the biggest developments in orthodontics, helping adults to straighten their smiles without feeling self conscious about ‘train tracks’ in their mouths.
The research found that those in the South East are more likely to feel they need braces, with 30% from the region saying they would benefit from orthodontics. It also revealed that when it comes to our teeth, there is no significant gender divide, with 18% of men and 19% of women feeling they could benefit from treatment. Around 6% of people said they would consider orthodontics as a worthy present for family or friends. It also found that younger people are more likely to feel they can benefit from orthodontics than the 70 plus category; 25% of 15-17 year olds said they would benefit from teeth straightening compared to just 5% of 45-54 year olds.
In a press release, Rob Slater, Chairman of BLOS, said, “Already we are finding that a fair proportion of teenagers would rather, where possible, pay privately to have lingual braces because it makes them feel less self-conscious, joining forces with those in their 30s and 40s who, for professional reasons, prefer not to have visible braces.”
