The Babies who are Vulnerable to Braces Later in Life

According to recent research babies who have developed few teeth by the time they are one year old are more likely to need braces when they grow up.

If your baby’s milk teeth are delayed, a new study shows the infant is more likely to be vulnerable to orthodontic treatment later in life. Orthodontic treatment can include having braces fitted as a corrective procedure to straighten crooked teeth. The role of orthodontists is to carry out corrective work such as gaps in the teeth, overlapping teeth and misaligned bites which can cause problems eating, chewing and with teeth grinding. Although the most common procedure orthodontists carry out is fitting braces.

Babies Destined for Braces?

But there’s nothing parents can do about the findings. The European research pulled on findings from three teams at Imperial College London, the University of Oulu in Finland and the University of Bristol. The researchers identified genes that they attributed to tooth development in the first year of life. The babies carrying the genes were 35% more likely to need orthodontics by the time they turned 30. The study reinforced the importance of genes in our make-up and health.

The researchers traced 6,000 people from birth in Britain and Finland to reach its conclusions, tracing their genetic code and following their dental history. The study could have a bigger impact on more than just whether or not a child may wear braces in later life, previous research has linked tooth development to overall body development – including the heart, ears, toes and skull. One of the researchers from Imperial College, Prof Marjo-Riitta Jarvelin said in a press release: “The discoveries of genetic and environmental determinants of human development will help us to understand the development of many disorders which appear later in life.”
She added: “We hope also that these discoveries will increase knowledge about why foetal growth seems to be such an important factor in the development of many chronic diseases.” Dental health has long been associated with the overall holistic health of our bodies. Gum disease for instance can be an indicator of heart disease. Often people see their teeth in the same way as their hair – as a cosmetic part of our bodies. And although it is clear how our teeth look dramatically impacts on our looks and attraction, a big part of that is due to the fact beautiful teeth indicate glowing health.
